Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
