Trump Administration to Issue 50% Food Stamp Benefits in November

The national government announced it would supply limited support to countless food stamp recipients as the ongoing government shutdown neared a historic length.

Benefit Reduction Information

Amid increasing uncertainty for the approximately 42 million Americans participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the USDA confirmed it would utilize reserve resources to maintain assistance, although at merely 50% of the regular amount recipients usually get.

Money for the initiative formally ended on the weekend due to the federal closure, now in its 34th day with little indication of ending.

Judicial Proceedings

The announcement came in a court filing after prior rejections to release emergency funding on purported legal grounds. A judicial authority had decided the leadership could not refuse program funds as a result of the shutdown.

After the judicial ruling, the president announced it would be "pleased" to provide vital funding for the program.

Implementation Difficulties

Administrators noted that funds could commence by Wednesday, but highlighted the need for more direction from the courts on how to properly reallocate money for SNAP support.

  • Several states have stated it will take multiple days or even longer periods to provide benefits to low-income families.
  • Long queues have been reported at charities throughout the nation.
  • In several regions, public facility car parks were repurposed into distribution sites.

State Crisis Measures

Multiple local governments, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced states of emergency to supply interim funds for support. However, these sums were expected to be a fraction of the regular government funding.

The federal costs for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion per month across the United States.
